USA Rugby to host legendary New Zealand All Blacks in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 23, at FedExField.

The All Blacks will return to USA for the first time since 2016 when they take on the USA Eagles at FedEx Field in Washington DC on Saturday October 23 in the inaugural 1874 Cup.

The 1874 Cup references the year rugby was first played in the United States, a collegiate match between McGill and Harvard University and celebrates the long and ever-growing history the United States has with the game of rugby.

All Blacks Captain Sam Cane said the All Blacks would be looking forward to a “special game” against the USA.  “We’ve really loved it every time we have gone there.  I know the team is excited about getting to America and particularly going to Washington, DC for the first time. It will be a historic match with a lot of meaning behind it and we hope that the rugby fans there really get behind the game. We can’t wait.”

President and chief executive officer of Events DC Gregory A. O’Dell said the opportunity to host the All Blacks in the nation’s capital would be a landmark day for rugby in the USA.

All Blacks Head Coach Ian Foster added: “We’re really excited to again be going back to the United States. To go to Washington, DC for a first-ever All Blacks Test there will be exciting for the team.

We’ve had a couple of great experiences in the US already, albeit with one bad result against Ireland in 2016.  But our game against the USA in 2014 was highly memorable, with real excitement from the crowd and huge interest in the All Blacks.  So hopefully it’s another chance to grow the game of rugby there.”

The USA Eagles are coming off their first assembly since 2019 and look ahead to a busy season with qualification for the 2023 France Rugby World Cup the major focus alongside Tests against the All Blacks and Ireland on US soil.

While the Wallabies' tactical approach has been more about skill, Los Pumas will instead bring a much more physical style, looking to take the All Blacks on and match them, rather than trying to beat them at their own game.

That gameplan saw Argentina take a famous 25-15 victory over their rivals in Sydney last year, but with the lessons of Australia firmly tucked away, Perenara knows that the All Blacks will have their work cut out for them.

"I probably can't touch too much on our gameplan going into it, but we understand that it is a different beast coming this week," Perenara says. "They're a very big team, they play with a lot of speed, a lot of passion and they're very physical.

"That's not saying that Australia aren't - they just implement it in different ways. They enjoy that one-on-one collision, they enjoy getting around the corner and coming straight at you.

The All Blacks are reportedly set to play in Washington DC for the first time ever in a test match that is expected to earn New Zealand Rugby.

According to a report from the New Zealand Herald, NZR will announce on Monday that the All Blacks will play the United States at the 82,000-capacity FedEx Stadium in the American capital on October 23.

The clash against the Eagles was initially planned to be held at the 70,000-capacity Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, but a fixture clash with the Raiders NFL team has forced the match to be shifted to Washington DC.

The match, which is expected to earn NZR between $2-3m, will be the first meeting between the All Blacks and the USA since 2014, when the Kiwis romped to a 74-6 victory at Soldier Field in Chicago.

This time, though, it is believed the All Blacks will play at the venue that is the home of the Washington Football Team, formerly known as the Redskins.

Despite having played 20 matches across the United States, the All Blacks have never played in Washington DC, but that is set to change when the fixture will reportedly be confirmed at a press conference on Monday.

The United States, meanwhile, are ranked 16th in the world and could be grouped with the All Blacks at the 2023 World Cup in France if they qualify for the tournament as Americas 1 in October.

News of the potential test in Washington DC comes as NZR continues negotiations for a $387.5m  of a 12.5 percent share of it commercial rights to Silicon Valley-based investment firm Silver Lake.

The test, should it go ahead as planned, will bring the All Blacks’ total number of tests for 2021 to 15 and will act as the opening test of their end-of-year tour where they will face Wales, Ireland, France and Italy in successive weeks.
